Central Air Installation Costs

Posted by Curious Consumer on April 12th, 2004 07:18 AM

I need a new central air unit. Had my normal contractor come by and take a look. Estimate is $1500 to replace the outside unit (2.5 Ton). He says he will re-use the existing lines and coil. His bid plays out like this....

$830.00 for the unit
$450.00 for the labor
$80.00 to evacuate what is left of existing unit
$150.00 for permits misc stuff.

I did some research and I can buy the exact same unit for $350.00. If anyone out there is in the business, isn't this a bit if a steep markup? I understand he needs to mark it up, but over 100%? What is the accepted practice out there?
