Well, it is simple arithmetic. Width times length times thickness, and convert each measurement to feet. Then the total volume is expressed in cubic yards. Allow some extra in case your measurements are a bit under; you don't want to run out.
If I understand your measurements correctly, I would call it 40' x 4' = 160 sq ft x 1/3' thickness. That would give you 53 cu ft. Divide by 3 three times and you come out to roughly 2 yards. To give it a magnitude check, a cubic yard is 27 cu ft, so two yards would be 54 cu ft.
