Paste wax Posted by Henry in MI on April 16th, 2004 07:18 AM In reply to Tung oil over poly? by MH on April 15th, 2004 07:54 AM [Go to top of thread]
MH, did you read and follow the directions on the wax? Perhaps being from a older generation, it's more natural for me but the way to apply paste wax is to wipe a little on with a small piece of white cotton cloth, let it sit until it forms a haze and wipe the haze off. This is just like the way you put polish on shoes except you wipe the haze off with cloth also (a bigger piece than what you used for application) instead of polishing it with a shoe brush.
Paste wax is good for a lot of things, including acting on your woodworking machine tables to make them smooth, so the wood slides easily, and protecting from rust. It's the same on other tools, older car finishes and many other things. One place not to use it is on wood floors as it makes the floor slippery.
Your poly finish does not have to be coated at all, unless you had a really rough surface and sanding or other abrasives break through the surface of the poly into the wood.
