Painting wood furniture

Posted by Mike Metcalf on April 17th, 2004 02:24 AM

Hi...I've got an oak armoire that is currently stained and varnished that we would like to paint black and distress to give it a weathered look. I am wondering if I have to strip or sand all the clear coat off to apply the black paint? And what type of paint should I use? (will go in master bedroom so it won't take a lot of abuse). I've heard i can use general purpose spray cans or should I use the spray gun and my compressor? Last question is regarding the sheen. We want a satin level of gloss....do i buy satin gloss paint and just paint it or flat paint and then apply a satin clear coat on top? Thanks for the help!
