Drilling HARD tile

Posted by Tom on April 17th, 2004 11:43 AM

Lessons learned:

I have to drill two one inch holes thru some VERY HARD tile for water lines. I bought a Vermont Masonry bit and the tile just laughed at me. I bought Titanium and it laughed.....(I could not find carbite tips for a non-hammer drill). I did manage to drill a couple small pilots but that is where I am now.....two tiny pilots with a long way to go.

I did not want to borrow or rent a hammer drill thinking that would crack the tile but have since learned that most have a switch to disable the hammer so I have the option of buying a twenty dollar bit again and renting/borrowing a hammer.

One mistake I made was I did not intially use water on the 1" masonry and so I think I dulled that to useless. What I am going to try now is get teeny tile bits and drilling a bunch of holes in a circle and punch out the center.
