Replacing load bearing wall

Posted by John on April 20th, 2004 09:10 AM

I have a ranch style house with what I'm assuming is a load bearing wall between 2 rooms on the upper floor that I want to remove. This wall runs down the middle of the house and is directly over the I beam support in the basement. The entire span I want to open up is 10 feet with one end being an exterior wall and the other end being a door I want to put in. Is there any way I could sister a couple of 2X's into the ceiling joists and then support these both at both ends oof the opening? I really don't want a 2x dropping down from the ceiling if I can avoid it. I realize this is a lot more work, but I don't want to do anything to deter from the structural integrity of the house.
