Impossible Posted by tomh on April 20th, 2004 12:33 PM In reply to Field Stone Siding by Jon on April 20th, 2004 11:46 AM [Go to top of thread]
Its not like you can just pile up stones next to an existing 100 year old house and create instant siding, you need a foundation to support the stone work and a lot of support and connection to the wall. I think that by the time you did this right, it would cost as much or more than restoring or replacing your wood? siding. This is not a project for a DIYer, but would require a skilled pro capable of constructing foundations and cutting and laying masonary and reinforcement. The stone wall would have to be self-supporting, your house frame was not designed to hold this massive stone wall. Even if you could construct the walls, you would need to modify all window and door openings and roof line to accomodate the extra thickness. Although your materials for the wall are essentially free, the labor and skill to put it to use on an existing structure would cost a great deal more than conventional siding. I dont think your idea is realistic, especially on a limited budget. Some folks think nothing is impossible, but you may have found it. Good luck. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
