To the best of my knowlege, the installation instructions do not specify use of thinset between the subfloor and backer. The warranty is not affected. The installation calls for placing edges on structural support, adding blocking as needed, and taping seams. This is also something I often omit and may affect warranty in a strict sense. Thing is, I have always used adequate subfloors and have never had a problem. In my opinion, the warranty is limited to the backer product and only guarentees the backer will remain noncombustible, resistant to termites, and will not crack rot or delaminate. It does not guarentee your tile will not crack. IMHO its a good product but the warranty is meaningless. Use your best judgement whether floor deflection is prevented by whatever installation method you use.
