drywall in bathroom

In our bathroom (with Vaulted ceiling) the drywall mud joints
are coming apart. It seems as if there was something wrong with
the drywall itself (oily, dirty?) this was a new home when we
moved in 9 years ago. The paint in this room peals and festers
no matter what type of paint we use. Help!
