Yes, you want a clean edge to the wood.
Standard practice here in SoCA is to use the "perfect edge" treatment. Get an aluminum Z-strip at a home center and set it under the tack strip when you nail that down. Tack strips usually come with concrete nails. You want about 1/4" gap from the edge of the Z-strip to the wood. Wrap the carpet over the Z-strip and mash it down. The carpet will actually be held in place by the tack strip. When you get this all in place, there will be no metal showing; hence, perfect.
Suggestion: at stress poits like doorways, use two tack strips, one right behind the other. This assures that the carpet will not come loose. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
