The best type of laminate flooring is that made of High Density Fiber (HDF). Which is the top quality you can get, there are laminates that are made of Medium Density Fiber (MDF) which are not that good. HDF is much more durable and has a lot more strength.

Regardless of whose name is on the flooring it doesn't matter because they are all just private labels for the laminates i.e. "Pergo" which is just a brand name. Almost all laminates are made in Europe so keep in mind labels don't matter, just if it is HDF.

To answer your 2nd question.. the sound you are referring to is typical of laminates. What you need is a high quality underlayment that will eliminate the tappy tap sound. Foam and cork is what is used as underlayment for laminates. Cork is the best to use as it has a 55 acoustical level which means it will pretty much get rid of the hollow sound. The only downside is its expensive.

There is one underlayment which I recommend called "The Silencer" which is the BEST underlayment available. It has a 59 acoustical level and will help maintain a level surface for your laminate when you put it down.

Hope this helps.
