Making your own is time consuming and requires a full shop. The desk/bookcase unit I am sitting at took a year to build and a year to finish!
Good quality unfinished furniture (not the cheap particleboard junk) can be quite nice, but it does take time to finish right. Buy a book on finishing to guide you. It is not cheap, but it is a fraction of the cost of quality furniture.
