Pocket Doors?

Hi Kathy,
I work for a finish carpentry buisness in Toronto
Ontario Canada, I also have studied Archtitecture for the
last three years. What I believe you are asking is
how hard is it to install "Pocket Doors". If this is the
case you probilly have room that you would like to
have a door or unit (2 doors) but don't have the room
for the doors to swing out on hinges. If this is the
case than the answer is yes! First you have to determin if
the wall where you wish to install the pocket door is load bearing
or not, this is very important as you will have to take it
down in order to allow the porper space for the pocket.
Also you need to go to your local Home Depot (Home Store)
and purchase whats called a pocket door kit, you may need
to know how thick the wall is (2x4/2x6 construction), second
deside what type of door(s) you would like, they can be
just about anything form pine french to standard hollow core
doors. The kit should come with instructions on how to install
it and the track (overhead) to your door(s).
Please note that the pocket door hardware actually
makes up the wall and that you will have to refinish
this (drywall/pannelling etc.) It sounds like a lot
of work but if you are handy, then the job is by no means
imposible. Your best bet is to talk to someone at a
store who can give you pictures of what you want to
do, you could install the door(s) yourself and just
hire someone to do the drywall this would save you
a lot of money.
