A GFCI is designed to trip with just a few milliamps of current leakage. This is great if an appliance, hair dryer, electric shaver, etc is being used by people around water. However, a sump pump is a critical component to prevent flooding in a homeowners basement. It is my opinion they should not be connected to a power source that is as unreliable as a GFCI.
