My husband and I just bought a house and started scraping the acoustic ceilings and didn't use masks or anything for protection. A family member told us it would be wise to test the ceiling for asbestos to be on the safe side. Well we just found out it contains about 2% asbestos. I have been crying and worried that we have been exposed. I remember seeing the dust as we scraped and inhaling the stuff without worrying about it. Now that we know there was asbestos I'm terrified! We're 30 years old and scared. Does anyone know if we were at risk? How much exposure is too much? Also, now that we have tampered with the areas, what do we do? Could husband remove the rest of it himself with a resperator and just wash the walls and floors to remove any of the dust? If we report it to a professional asbestos cleaning Co., will we be fined for tampering with the stuff? What rammifications does it entail?
