fiber mesh tape to cover the crack, then cover tape with drywall mud. when you buy the tape and mud, get a small scrap of drywall to put in the hole. bevel the sides of the hole and the replacement plug cut from the scrape. use a short piece of wood that will fit thru the hole, with a string on the wood, pull the string to hold the wood in place and secure with a couple of drywall screws. remove string and fasten the plug with a screw. cover patch with some mesh tape and mud. when the mud is dry, sand smothe and prime with drywall primer. you are now ready to paint. it will take about a day for the mud to dry, depending on how thick you applied it, prior to sanding
