3 tab shingling Posted by carl on May 2nd, 2004 12:10 PM In reply to 3 tab shingling by jeremy on May 2nd, 2004 10:11 AM [Go to top of thread]
jeremy, I have only used the standard half shingle layout. my guess for you setup would be to divide the width of the shingle by 5 and use that measurement for each offset. a 36" shingle would be 7.2 inches, or 3.6 inches if you want the vertical cutouts closer togeather. to get a straight line at the ridge, measure from the top to the bottom on each side. If there is a difference of less that 1 inch, start the startes so that the overhang at the eaves will compensate for the differences. i normally use 1 inch overhang from the facia board to get good water flow into the gutter. this could be used to get the starter cours and first row of shingles parallel to the ridge. when I have roofed, (have done 4 houses) i start by removing all existing roofing to the sheeting, inspectiong for any signs of damage to the sheeting. then cover with 30 lb felt (overkill in some roofers opinion). cut the tabs off the starter row of shingles and apply wioth the necessary overhang. after the overhang is eatablished at each end to give straight row of shingles at ridge, snap a chalk line at the top of the end starters to get straight line. to keep everthing neat, i snap a line for every row of shingles. lines are 5 inches apart for the standard 5 inch exposure of the tabs. for your case, i would make a gauge for the offest of each row of shingles. using the above measurement for offset. i would lay out the desired pattern on the driveway prior to any inital cutting of the shingles for the ends of the roof. Hope this is the info you need Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
