If you were having a new house built by a moderately sized builder and it comes standard with some sort of generic house wrap at no extra cost. It costs $1500 to upgrade to Tyvek housewrap. Would you do it?
I chose not to do it because I figured the Tyvek wouldn't save me that much money over the time I owned the house (let's say 15 years) and I wouldn't receive $1500 in benefit. Additionally, I figured the Tyvek would only be beneficial if it was installed correctly but I assume there are shortcuts, that if taken, would make the Tyvek wrap much less effective. I don't know how difficult it is to install it properly. The article alluded to water getting behind the Tyvek if not properly installed. There were no assurances a thorough inspection would take place to ensure proper installation of the Tyvek.
