I had the same problem. I was told by the plumbers that my toilet had iron buildup. Purchased Iron-Out. Poor a few cap fulls into the tank, swish it around then let it sit for a few minutes. Flush and you should see that most of it it gone along with the smell. Repeat if you have more rust.
