Basement Smell

We purchased our townhome (new) in 1999. However, within the last year, our basement has a strong odor. I can't really relate the smell to anything I'd recognize, but it kind of smells like something metallic and water with the smell being stronger in certain areas of the basement, like the wall that separates the furnace room from the rest of the basement. Our basement is finised, so I can't see the walls.
I'm at a point where the smell is an is obnoxious.
