We have an older home with a 1960's addition built on the back. Its a pretty amateur effort; the ceiling height is only ~84" but its a lot of floor space and quite sturdy. I'd like to pull out an existing window and replace it with a sliding door, but the problem is lack of room for a proper header over the new doorway: Given that the door itself is 82" tall, I've got precious little space to work with. Has anyone ever heard of a substitute approach for using a wood header, such as a custom steel plate with the proper length and thickness, but would have similar strength as a 6" wood header? Suggestions, ideas?
