You size a softener based on the hardness, iron and manganese content of the water, how much water is used (number of people in the family + any additional daily water use for like a garage/barn) and then, the serviice flow rate (SFR) of the softener based on the flow rate of the plumbing the unit will be installed on. All softners/filters have a SFR which means if you run water through them at a higher gpm flow, you don't remove all the hardness iron or manganese.

The SFR of a 32K softener is 9 gpm; regardless of what some web sites selling softeners tell you. I've seen some sites saying as high as 20 gpm. What they are describing is the figure the control valve flows at with a 15 psi pressure drop. That is not the SFR of the softener.
