Hi Ben,
Remove the blade from the mower.
Clean the blade very, VERY well. I attach a steel brush-wheel to my drill, put the drill in the vice grips, lock the drill in the ON position, and run the blade (both sides) across the bristles. The reason you want to clean it up is so that when you go to balance the blade, you're not 'including' any debris in the balance.

To check your balancing and sharpening work, you should be able to balance a blade, like an airplane propeller, by slipping the blade onto the end of a pen (or something like that), and the blade shouldn't rotate! Moving the blade to ANY 'position', to like 4:50pm or to like 6:00pm or to like 2:45pm or the like, you shouldn't see the blade 'spin'. If it spins on its own, then there's too much weight on one 'end' of the blade and it must be ground off. If you install an UNBALANCED blade on to a lawn mower, it will stress the drive shaft and possibly break the shaft! A wobbling effect in the blade would cause this to happen.
Good luck! My best to ya and hope this helps.
