Washing machine drain

Posted by I hate plumbing, but I have a question... on May 6th, 2004 07:42 AM

Curious if you agree with my diagnosis of this problem. I have a washing machine drain hose connected to a open vertical pipe (2 inch pvc). This vertical has a “p” trap at the bottom. After a horizontal run of two feet, a laundry sink connects into the drain pipe. The sink also has a “p” trap. After about a 7 foot horizontal run, the pipe connects into the vertical main drain and disappears below the basement floor. When the washer drains, it backs up into the laundry sink. I don’t think the line is clogged because as soon as the washer quits pumping, the sink drains very fast. I can fill the sink with water and it drains quite quickly. I’m wondering if this line needs a vent since it is horizontal and has no way of venting until it gets to the main drain? I was considering installing an “air induction” valve to see if this helps. Any opinions?
