Type... there are cabinet models (hard to work on), two tank models and twin tank models. Two and twin tank models have a separate brine tank and the two tank has a single resin tank while the twins have two. The cabinet and two tank models are delayed regenerated. They wait until 2:00 AM usually, while the twins are immeditate regenerated with soft water from the tank that is all but exhausted. immediate regeneration can cause pressure loss problems due to regeneration taking place while you're up and using water. Twins and some cabinet and two tank models have soft water brine refill. Some two tank and cabinet models have variable brining and variable reserve. And actually, it's the control valve that 'controls' the softener that's responsible for these features. Or the lack thereof, so I'll mention that the Clack WS-1 and Fleck 7000 should be mentioned too and sepecifically. Especially for the DIYer that wants to buy parts over the internet and repair their softener if needed. You can't get many of the above options with big box mass marketed and thereby proprietary 'types' of softeners.

You should check out the service flow rate of the Waterboss in the size you need and compare it to the flow rate of your plumbing. Then ask who fixes them in your area if needed, and maybe what the price of the most often replacement part is.
