I too fell victim to the Maytag Performa set. Although mine are a bit older than the ones previously mentioned. I purchased mine in April 1998 at a very well known Maytag dealership in my area. When I purchased the set I expected a washer and dryer that was going to last for years to come, because it was a MAYTAG......I paid a good bit for the set because it was MAYTAG.... As you all have also probably seen the frequent commercials of that poor lonely MAYTAG... repair man sitting there with nothing to do, because they never break down. WELLLLLLLLLLLL I have come the the conclusion that MAYTAG... put this model out to give that poor old guy something to do. HA HA HA.......
I have had to have both my washer and my dryer serviced in the six years that I have owned them, the dryer was the thermostat and the washer was the main seal. Both repairs totalling well over $300.00. If I had known that I was going to have to put this kind of money into the pair so soon after buying them, I sure wouldn't have spent the money for them to begin with. I would have gone down to the used furninture and appliance dealer and purchased used ones, at a fraction of the price of my new MAYTAG.... set, fully expecting to have them repaired at some point.
I also called the MAYTAG... company after this last repair bill was put into my hand. I was told well SORRY.... but can we interst you in an extended warranty...... I was floored that they were actually trying to get moreeeeee of my money, when I was calling with a perfectly legitimate complaint. I asked the lady if she thought that I was going to need it???????? that I certainly hoped NOT, and I politely hung up on her.
Another bit of info.... my repair man also told me that these were actually Magic Chef appliances with the MAYTAG... name on them, that MAYTAG.... had purchased this company and put their name on some of their products (I'm sure to sell the darned things). But this was denied when I mentioned it to the MAYTAG.. representative, but I trust my repair man and he knows his stuff, I am sure he wouldn't have said it if it wasn't true. I have tried to find where the units were manufactured to track down just who made them, but there is no marking on them as to where. So if anyone out there knows for sure please email me at ohiogal1961@yahoo.com .
As for weather or not I would ever buy MAYTAG.... again........ I hardly think so. I have and will also pass my experience with them on to everyone that I know and everyone that I run across. The next time I need a new major appliance I think I will go anywhere but MAYTAG...
they have a very dissatisfied customer in me.......
