The FAN.....Black and the Black/white get wired together and connect to the PURPLE.......Both will operate together.......use the pull chains or remote to make individual adjustments....
Joan.....you clearly stated the wires and their location and connections including the all important switch(s).....good work...
The house was wired with some potential for re-configuring the switches.......that BLUE wire that is unused could provide a switched fan separate from the light.........
