Hi, Melanie. I think that you can find quite a bit of information already on this board. From the Message Board page, hit ctrl+f. A window will appear and you type in a key word like cabinet or refinish. You can click down the topic list only to places where the key word appears.
You are lucky that your wood is apparently natural oak color or something close to it. Many cabinets when yours was made are stained to a darker color. You might want to take a look at the Minwax Pastel line of stains.
