I just had the same problem trying to figure out an old jack in the kitchen... I found out that apparently in the 'old' days there was a system where 3 wires were used, red, green and yellow...the red and yellow need to be tied together either at the junction or at the phone, you can only use this for single lines of course since there is no 4th wire. Try it out....
