I had the same problem with a recliner that I bought in a yard sale. We are non smokers and could not stand the smell. I poured baking soda all over and rubbed it in really well. Let it set over night. Vaccum the baking soda out. It was amazing how it elimated the odor. We used the chair until we wore it out. It did work on material.
