what are you trying to remove from the brick? soot or curtain climber fingerprints? a scrubbing with soap and water with scrubbrush orks great for most dirt and soot. if soot and smoke are refusing to go away with soap and water, then use mineral spirits to break down the creasote in the stains, followed by soap and water.
bad soot/smoke stains normally cannot be completely removed due to soaking into the poreous surface of the brick
