Never use ammonia!! To a cat, it smells just like their own urine. Vinegar is the best solution, or if you want to get fancy, try Massengil's douche (I am not kidding - it happens to be mostly vinegar, anyway). That's what the experts use to remove skunk odor.
In order to clean the couch, you need to let at least as much vinegar soak in, as did urine. Then you have to give it time. If the cat doesn't do it again it will dissipate after several months, although it might be more noticable on humid days. Cats will urinate or defecate in response to things that threaten them, including other cats roaming outdoors. You can lock your cat in a small room with its litterbox and food/water to retrain it, but don't hit or punish it, or the cat will feel even more threatened and continue to urinate. Reward good behavior, but be careful how you punish bad. ONE MORE IMPORTANT THING: The cat, especially if it's male, could have a bladder infection or "crystal" problem. Make sure you rule out the medical causes. If the cat associates the litterbox with pain, he may need some retraining to use it. Confinement along with placing aluminum foil where they have urinated (or feeding them there) are the most effective methods to retrain a cat to only use the litterbox. Was this post helpful?
