A/C rusting Posted by Dan O. on May 22nd, 2004 09:44 PM In reply to salty air & A/C units by Dave on May 22nd, 2004 09:08 AM [Go to top of thread]
** The A/Cs we have go through the wall, but they keep rusting out. Is this common even without the salty air, because of the condensation draining out? **
Parts of a window/wall air conditioners do rust even in inland areas but it usually take many, many years before it creates a problem. If they are professionally cleaned every 3 years (or every years if used in a high traffic area) like they should be, the beginnings of rust will usually be noticed and can be treated if necessary. I imaging in coastal areas it is even more important that routine maintenance be done regularly.
If left to the point where the parts thoroughly rust through, there's not much which can be done for them.
** The A/Cs we have go through the wall... Is there maybe a plastic cased unit that will require replacing less often? **
I've never seen a mostly plastic through the wall model but there may be some out there. If necessary what you could do is see if a local factory service depot can coat a metal base pan with a rust resistant coating to help protect it. Most of the other parts like the fans, may be plastic and unaffected by rust.
