Did just what I said, took a big breathe, disconnected the side rails, and chopped the rotten part off. Then made careful measurements (twice) and cut a nice straight line to top it. Cut a new piece of 4x4 and used Weldwood cement to set it and am bracing it with a couple angle braces. May take them off later after the glue dries (1 week) and they are obvious but they work.
