kitchen counter tops

Hi Bob, I am wondering if there is a reasonably thrifty way to resurface a kitchen counter top. Like maybe glue fabric on, and polyerathan heavily? Would this even work? I would appreciate your advice. Thanks so much, and have a great evening. Ruby
