The pump should feed a holding tank and the tank will have some type of expandable chamber in it like a rubber bladder. The idea is the chamber pushed on the water and feeds the pipes for a while. That chamber is water logged and the pump is doing all the work. You;re right it will wear out the pump faster. Find the tank and if it's not self explanantory write back with what you find.
