Audra, I am not an expert in well systems, but I do have a pressure tank. Leave the valve open, and turn OFF the pump. Then open the water valves in the lowest point in the house and allow the pressure tank to drain. There should also be a schrader valve at the top of the tank where air can be added and pressure checked.
You have more than one possibility here, you could have a bad pressure switch, or the pressure tank may be water logged or both. Also, the pressure tank bladder may be ruptured, in which case, the drain and refill procedure will not work. You may even see water escape from the air valve when you put a pressure gauge on it.
