george, you didnt say if these were contractors you knew. recommend you take a look at previous like work they have done and you will get your answer. there are many ways to build and meet code but it is ALWAYS a decision based on money.
The two-flats in CHI were not built with the modern engineering and products available to you. whatever you build will outlast you lifespan.
