Improving crawl space of pier foundation

Posted by K Campbell on May 30th, 2004 12:40 AM

My husband and I have recently purchased a modified A-frame cabin w/ a 700 sqft rectangular footprint. The structure rests on a pier foundation installed many years ago. The house was built on a hill, where 1/3 of the 1st floor lies @ ground level (supported by the only poured wall in the foundation, a 22 foot that appears to be in good shape), and the other 2/3 sit on a slope 1-7 feet above ground (supported by piers). We would like to improve the crawl space of the exposed 2/3 of the house's underside by pouring footings and framing walls between each pier to form an enclosed utility space and 'workshop'. The problem is that we A: don't know how deep the piers go; and B: we don't know if pouring footings and grade-level concrete between the piers will disrupt the stability of the current structure. Any comments?
