Chris, you also have a toddle on the way and part of "child-proofing" your house is to do what you can to remove sharp edges and corners from your house until the child is steady on his/her feet and aware and alert to the surroundings. This happens about the time they move out to get married or go away to college, but you really do have to be more careful and aware yourself until they are past the toddler stage.

Acrylic sheet or plate can be fabricated into furniture. This is available at inductrial plastics stores and you can get an idea what it is like at the convenience store in the part of your town where robberies occur often. This is the clear material around the cash register area. It comes in several thicknesses. It is easier to scratch this than glass. Fabrication is similar to the fabrication that you do with wood but gluing is a lot more difficult since the glue wants to go everywhere and leave a visual trail when it does. Edge preparation is also critical to come out with a good looking piece. The suppliers of this materail tend to not do too much to help someone get started learning how to fabricate the plastic but you might be lucky in your area.

Another way to go is to make a wood table base and have a glass top made for it. Wood is a much more forgiving material and your glass supplier can order glass that is appropriate for this usage. It will still have the corners and edges that could be dangerous for toddlers though.
