Replacing existing beam to remove column.

Posted by Ron in a Jam on June 1st, 2004 10:57 AM

I found my self a little problem. I own a raised ranch and have the family room in the basement. I was looking to take the column out of the middle of the room by adding L steel 3/8" thick bolted to existing 3 ea 2 x 10's on both sides but i ran into a snag. I stripped the drywall from around the column and found that the morons that built the house had to join all three 2 x 10's above that column. This is the first time I've seen this. I usually see the joints staggered above different columns or the joining of the 2 X 10's above a wall in the room. Never have I seen them joined above that particular column. I think most builders think of the possibility of the home owner wanting to remove this eyesore / space killing column and build it right but such is life. Now my problem is how to remove that column. Should I remove the 2 x 10's to above the next column that will remain and replace with a Micro Lam beam or a Steel beam? And what size? There is a Kitchen and a living room above this area. Thanks for any input.
