The column was not built incorrectly, but its replacement should be engineered, not guessed. The beam the column supports, in turn supports the floor joists and structures above it. You cannot simply remove the column and beam and expect everything to remain in place. The total span and load above will determine the size of the replacement beam, but whether the total load can be distrubuted to the remaining columns and footers must also be determined.
Your project is structural in nature and cannot be answered here with the information provided. Structural modifications generally require permitting and engineering (not necessarily in that order).
