skim coating damaged drywall

with a pre-mixed joint compaound worked very well for me. Sounds like you had a similar problem to mine. Removing wall paper from walls that were not sized - caused a fair amount of damage to the drywall. I used a fast cure pre-mixed joint compound. Use a wide blade to apply then sand smooth when dry. I recommend a dustless sander.
