How do you finish a screw and plug for hardwood floors?
We have a 0.5" forstner bit and corresponding tapered plug bit. Our idea is to drill a fixed depth hole with the forstner bit, say 3/8" then put in a screw. A tapered plug would be cut from a planed piece of 3/8" stock and tapped in. However, is there a better way? How do you hold the plug in, especially for years? Is tapping it in with a hammer enough? Should I use glue or will that cause a problem with the stain? Because my father-in-law is a cabinet maker with a full shop we were able to make the wood planks, 6" x 8ft birch, and have them all sanded and planed at the shop so I am hestitant to put in a plug and then do a lot of sanding on that plug. Will it be necessary?
