You are not an idiot for your experience. Personally I would go ahead and do it. I have had these things before and the manufacturer has figured out long ago that the manual may not be correct for the user, so they bullet proof what they make. The manuals are generic and any caution notes are all you have to read. And no, nothing is wrong with me that a rocket propelled grenade couldn't fix.
