the easiest way to help keep the water clean is to divert the initial inflow of water from the roof to allow the rain to wash off the accumilated roof dirt. the time to diversion depends on how heavy the rainfall is. there is a special diversion adapter to install in the downspout that will allow the water to go to the cistern or to the outside depending on the setting. also have a good critter proof cover to keep frogs out. every couple of years, drain and use a scrub brush to clean interior and remove any accumilated debris.
