I have filled a lot of knot holes, splits and cracks in exterior siding and trim using wood filler prior to painting. I get good durable results and the repairs are invisible after sanding. I dont know the relative merits of spackling compound, but this works for me. I use Elmers Carpenters interior exterior Wood Filler in the quart container which consists mostly of mineral fillers in a latex formula. Seems to go on quickly and adhere well, sands flat.

From what I can tell, there is not much difference between products marketed as wood filler and spackling compound. Both use calcium carbonate and lime fillers. But since wood filler is specifically designed for surface preparation in wood, thats what I use.
