Dark wood

Some woods, like cherry, do get darker with age. Some wood is stained and, while Minwax may not have been around with all the current colors 80 years ago, things like tobacco juice, iron oxide and ammonia were used as stains alson the way. Paint, both oil based and milk based, were available along with paint-like concoctions of pigments.

Until you know what you have, start out gentle by washing with water and a mild detergent (Murphy's Oil Soap is OK) and then move to wiping down with a solvent and moving further to stripping the finish and refinishing. I'm not a fan of washing with water and don't use any more than you absolutely have to. If you do elect to wash with a solvent like mineral spirits or acetone, do follow all the safety warnings from the material manufacturer and a lot of common sense.
