Some people would be surprised to know that what you are seeing is oxidation, which is a protective and naturally occuring phenomenon all to itself. If you were to somehow scrap off the oxidation, it would oxidize again over time. I had an aluminum screen door that did the same thing and I overheard on a radio talk show that this oxidation is both a good thing and an unsightly thing. It protects against further corrosion but doesn't look great as when new.
