Betsy, Keep the hubby, and once you figure out what it is you want to 'notch', someone will help you "do it right." If you don't have the plans for a Pergola, click Pergola Plans, check them out, and ask the question again. For all I/we know, you want to notch a rafter when what you really want to notch is a beam. Sorry 'bout getting heavy on the Hubby. Maybe he can at least do one for you to get you started. In closing, here's my disclaimer: Since I can't see it, I can't help. Jay J
